This is an IOP special interest group, which is a community of IOP members focused on a particular discipline, application or area of interest.
Special interest groups allow members to connect and share knowledge and ideas. The IOP funds groups to deliver a range of activities including events, prizes and bursaries. All of our groups are driven by members.
About the group
As a special interest, member-driven group, we are the UK's national optical society. With over 1,500 members, we are one of the three largest optical societies in Europe. As a member of the European Optical Society the group represent the interests of the UK's optics and photonics community in Europe.
We can trace our history back to the foundation of the Optical Society of London in 1899 and celebrated our centenary in 1999.
What the group does
Our activities include:
- free events throughout the year
- organising and promoting the bi-annual Photon conference
- meeting about three times a year, normally in January, May and September
1-4 September 2020 - to be held as a virtual event
Photon 2020 is the biennial optics and photonics conference organised by the Institute of Physics in the UK. Over four days, Photon participants can:
- attend lectures from experts in the field
- get up to date with cutting-edge research
- visit exhibitions on the latest in optics and photonics technology
The programme will include a plenary session, invited talks, presentations and posters.
Organised by the IOP Environmental Physics, Instrument and Science Technology, Optical, Quantum Electronics and Photonics, Quantum Optics, Quantum Information and Quantum Control and Medical Physics groups.
