Mayneord Phillips Education Programme launches 2021 Summer School
Today (7 November 2019), International Day of Medical Physics, the Mayneord Phillips Educational Programme launches its 2021 Summer School. The theme will be Advances in Solid State Detectors for Early Diagnosis.
The programme is a partnership between the Institute of Physics, the British Institute of Radiology (BIR) and the Institute of Physics and Engineering in Medicine (IPEM). Its prestigious summer school is primarily aimed at early career professionals, including NHS clinical scientists, post-graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and engineers and innovators working on product solutions in industry. The programme aims to be inclusive and accessible to people from diverse backgrounds and circumstances.
The partnership today announces that the head of faculty for the 2021 school (expected to take place in early July of that year), will be Dr Dimitra Darambara. Dimitra is team leader in Multimodality Molecular Imaging at The Institute of Cancer Research and The Royal Marsden NHS Foundation Trust. She is immediate past chair of the IOP’s Medical Physics Group.
Every two years, the summer schools accommodate around thirty students who attend seminars and discussion groups with leading figures in the field. Many of the friendships established at previous schools have endured throughout participants’ working lives. This spirit of collaboration and connection remains a priority for the summer schools.
Anne Crean, head of science and innovation at the IOP, commented: “By combining our capability and networks, the partners bring together NHS clinical scientists, post-graduate students, post-doctoral researchers and engineers, and innovators working on product solutions in industry. This gives an unparalleled and unique learning and networking experience for those wishing to pursue a career in this exciting field.”
Simon Thompson, chief executive of the BIR, said: “The Mayneord Philips summer school has a place in the hearts of generations of scientists. We are thrilled to be taking part in the relaunch of this important institution.”
Kathryn Surtees, head of operations & finance and interim chief executive at the IPEM, said: “IPEM is delighted to be collaborating with the Institute of Physics and the British Institute of Radiology to deliver the 2021 Mayneord Philips Summer School for early career professionals.”
